Welcome to the Cryo PC Newsletter Q2 2009

Hi,

Lots to talk about again in our newsletter great new milestones have been set in performance, technology prices have dropped since Christmas with the maturing of some new technologies and the improvement of the US dollar to pound exchange rate.  In addition some important new technologies have been released and we've been able to make a few innovations in performance and functionality available in our line-up.  The best technology is more accessible now than ever.  Enjoy...

Cryo Velox Wins Double
PCW Magazine Award

We knew we were onto something special with our Velox design when the first Core i7 version of it set a clear new benchmark record well ahead of the nearest competition.  We were delighted that it also blew PCW magazine away when they reviewed it and awarded it 'Best Buy' and 'Recommended' in the July issue review.  They called it '...the fastest desktop PC on the planet'.  Who are we to disagree.  With every month we keep making it faster with little improvements here and there!

In November we launched our first Core i7 based design, the Cryo Tetrad.  Our mid-level performance machine with air cooling.  It gave us the launch pad to get our flagship machine the Velox refreshed with Core i7 processor, the latest low latency Corsair Dominator C7 2GHz+ memory and our newly developed -40C high wattage sub-zero cooling technology (Phase Change).  Now the 975 Extreme CPU is available to our customers we can step it up even further with the following specification:

  • Core i7 975 Extreme CPU
  • Cryo Boost from 4.4GHz+
  • X58 chipset supporting up to 12GB of triple channel memory
  • onboard SATA-II and SAS RAID controllers
  • higher speed memory
  • options for up to two RAID sets

The Velox resolutely continues to defend its No 1 spot on Custom PC's benchmark leader board.

Home Theatre PC - Further development in sound cards, digital sound processing and BluRay HD up-scaling make now a better time than ever to think about using a PC for your Home Theatre or Media Centre.  They offer all the functionality and upgradability of a PC at a fraction of the price of dedicated home theatre appliances.  So record live TV, store your own video and photos, play your film collection, listen to your favourite music, play your best games, browse the Internet and your emails, all on one device neatly tucked away in the comfort of your living room.

Intel Core i7 - launched in November last year the whole range of CPU's has been refreshed by Intel to the 920 D0 stepping, 950 and 975 Extreme versions.  Prices have fallen a little and performances risen a lot take a look at our new Cryo Boost figures to see how much further these cooler faster CPU's can go.

Nehalem EP is out and EX is coming - hot on the heals of Core i7 desktop processors now available is the Xeon 5500 series based on the same architecture but with dual processor boards now available and quad processor boards coming by Q1 2010.  Together with the possibility of 8-core processors ('EP') that potentially means 32-core ('EX') workstations are on the horizon, and not very far away.  At least as important is the QuickPath (QPI) architecture change which makes the new processors scale well with supported memory bandwidth almost ten times that of any predecessor.

This is all music to the ears of those who Video encode, perform scientific analysis like fluid dynamics, work with 3D graphics or CAD, run simulations or chess games, or those that just love having a supercomputer under their desk.

Big Price drops - with four new graphics cards, new AMD and Intel CPU's, a refresh of processors and manufacturers producing much larger quantities of DDR3 memory prices have fallen across the board.  Helped along by the strengthening of the pound against the dollar prices have dropped approximately 20-30%.  This means we are now able to offer the new Core i7 builds at lower prices than ever.  New technology has never been within easier reach.

Cryo backs Team Infused - Last month we announced official Title sponsorship support for Team Infused the well-known and successful multi-gaming and eSports organisation.  They have a proven track record with professional gaming teams competing with Counter Strike Source (CSS) and Call of Duty 4 (CoD4).  At the same time they secured the girls CoD4 gaming team from PMS as well as making some key new signings to augment existing quality teams.  Team Infused is gearing up for another round of successes at i37 in August and in online tournaments through the coming year.  They will be using several of our Nano machines to have the best equipment to help their teams win.  We are pleased and proud to be able to offer our full support.

At the same time Cryo PC will continue supporting other promising gaming teams making there way up through the ranks.

New Products and Options for Summer 2009

New ‘Cryo Nano’ - debuted at the recent Multiplay i36 with Team Infused using it in anger in winning events.  The new Nano is a real innovation in terms of the shear performance capability that is packed into a small space.  The Nano case has a footprint only a little larger than an A4 sheet of paper and yet packs a bigger punch than most full size desktops.  In standard configuration it comes with a 4GHz Core 2 processor, 4GB of performance memory and a GTX 260 overclocked graphics card.  Core i7 processor configurations are also available.  Team Infused found typical gaming frame rates over 250fps constantly.  You can also choose your own setup from our as usual large variety of configuration options in both 3.5GHz Core i7 and 4GHz Core 2 depending on whether you need high speed or high multi-tasking capacity.  Total PC Gaming magazine reviewed it last month and said ‘...we can't think of anything else we'd recommend...’ rating it highly in its class giving it a positive 8/10 overall score.  You don't have to be a Pro gamer to get the benefits of the Nano if you just want a bit more room and a lot more power than a standard desktop gives you the Nano is the machine to have.

Corsair Ultra High Performance memory & SSD drives - our close relationship with Corsair continues to bear fruit with new Dominator GT ultra high performance memory modules (as used in our record setting Velox) and new performance leading SSD drives based on the recognised leading Samsung controller becoming part of our available configuration options.

NEW nVidia 275 and ATI 4890 graphics cards - Despite the recession the pace of technology development isn’t easing up with new graphics cards from both ATI and nVidia now being available for the mid-range market.  This has pushed down the prices of the still very respectable 4870 and GTX 260 cards, at the same time as setting a new mid-price benchmark.  Our product configuration options have already been updated to reflect price changes and new cards.  Our favourite is the nVidia 275 card it being a new GPU as opposed to the ATI 4890 which is a 4870 with higher clock speeds.

nVidia 3D Vision arrives - 3D imagery seems to be having a renaissance.  Not only in cinema but on the PC as well with nVidia 3D glasses and stereoscopic displays.  This time it seems a lot less gimmicky, there’s no huge and heavy headsets or dodgy laggy motion sensors, its smooth, neat, lightweight, and almost cool looking to wear.  It’s also very affordable.

Check it out on the nVidia site with some demo animations and video trailers.  Expect to see new game titles having 3D as an option to enhance the experience even more.

Octane gets an i7 (‘Nehalem EP’) option - Intel launched their new Dual CPU chipset last month known collectively as Nehalem EP.  It doesn’t quite herald the death of Skulltrail just yet as the old platform still has some useful life left in it but certainly this is now the way to go for high memory throughput, highly scalable, multi CPU workstations and servers.  With low end Xeon processors available for the platform you can now get an 8-core workstation for as little as around Ł2000.  Which makes it also cheaper than the old platform by some considerable margin.

If you need high speed processors as well as powerful multitasking across eight cores the Xeon W5580 is the cream of the crop at 3.2GHz, 6.4GT/s and 8MB of L3 cache, at factory settings.  We have carefully selected a future proof motherboard platform that will allow you to choose between ECC server or non-ECC performance memory.  Memory support is on two triple channels one to each CPU (yep six sticks minimum for full bandwidth!).  The maximum memory supported is now as much as 96GB or more.

For applications requiring high memory bandwidth and solid multi-tasking performance like video processing, 3D graphics, CAD, fluid dynamics, scientific applications and Chess algorithms the Nehalem EP is the killer platform to have.  It only gets better next year when in Q1 we should expect to see Nehalem EX supporting four sockets of eight core CPU’s, 16 to 32 cores, a whopping 63 threads of execution with HyperThreading, and even more memory as 4GB modules become available!

Have a great summer!!
